Mass Protests in Brazil, with Rodrigo Nunes

Wednesday 3 July, 2013
8pm

Brazil has been shaken by a wave of protests in the last few weeks on a scale unseen in a long time. Starting with protests against bus fare rises, and stoked by the brutality of police violence, they ended up catalysing a series of diffuse grievances, as well as becoming the target of attempts to hijack them and turn them in a specifically anti-government direction. This talk will approach the causes of the protests, the genealogy of their emergence and viral spread, and sketch out the potentials and risks of the present political scenario in Brazil.

The event will be held in English with translation into German available.

RODRIGO NUNES is an associate lecturer and researcher at PUCRS, Porto Alegre, Brazil, where he coordinates the research group Materialismos. He is a member of the editorial collective of Turbulence. As of August 2013, he will be a lecturer in contemporary philosophy at PUC-Rio, Rio de Janeiro.

This event is organised by the Heinrich Böll Foundationâs Educational Institute in Berlin. It has been made possible through funding by the Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin.

There are a limited number of places available for this seminar and it is essential to register by writing to: global@bildungswerk-boell.de
